On July 21, 2018, we got our dog Luna from a local shelter through their foster to adopt program. 2 weeks later we started noticing that she was getting wide around the ribs and suspected that she was pregnant. I called the shelter to let them know, thinking they would have me bring her in to get checked out, maybe see how far along she is, or how many puppies she has. Instead, the lady there told me to take her in so they could spay her. I said again, "But I think she's pregnant". And she goes, "Yea, and we still need to do it". I couldn't believe they wanted to kill her puppies and were so nonchalant about it!
I felt so bad because she wasn't technically ours yet (adoption gets finalized when they spay them). I felt like I had to do what they said; she was still their property. She was scheduled to get her last vaccine and spay on 8/9. I found an organization called last litter that takes in pregnant and nursing dog mothers, sends puppies to out of state rescues and helps get mom spayed. They gave me instructions on how to get Luna under their program so they don't spay her out. They said to still take her for her shot on 8/9 but do not let them take her to the back and tell them she is now under them. Unsurprisingly, when I ook her for the shot, 3 people
Told me that they could take her to get spayed, even though the paperwork was already done to transfer to last litter. I stood my ground and told them I refuse to get her spayed. After they spoke with the director, they agreed.
Whew!
We kept her home and watched her get bigger and bigger over the next few weeks and she finally gave birth in 8/28 to 6 beautiful, healthy puppies.
On 10/19 we shipped them off to Colorado Puppy Rescue and thankfully they all got adopted that next weekend. We tried not get to attached, but we did. We loved them all.
Needless to say I have so many pictures in my phone. Photos that I would love to share with their new families so that I can make room for more with Luna. I can't just delete them without trying to get them out. I also wanted to share their story.
I found their pictures and their adoption numbers and would like to share my email address in case their new families want pictures of them or to see what mama looks like.
